In the quiet community of Gantt, South Carolina, a grim discovery brought a sudden end to the peaceful lives of an elderly couple. On Wednesday, September 17, 2025, 84-year-old Catherine Knight Jones and her husband, Webster Stanley Jones, also 84, were found deceased with gunshot wounds in the front yard of their home on North Windgate Road. The Greenville County Coroner's Office later ruled the deaths a murder-suicide.
Catherine, a native of Anderson County, was a retired employee of
Union Carbide. She was an active member of her community and Washington Baptist Church, where she was involved with the WMU and the Geraldine Woods Sunday School Class. She also held a membership with the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Her life was one deeply rooted in family and faith.
The investigation into the tragic incident concluded that Webster Stanley Jones was the perpetrator in the death of his wife, Catherine. Authorities determined that he shot his wife before taking his own life. A gun was recovered at the scene. This conclusion meant there would be no arrests or further search for suspects as the individual responsible was also deceased. The motive behind the devastating event was not made public.
Catherine was survived by her son, Kevin Colton Jones, and a brother, Roger Knight. She was preceded in death by nine of her siblings. The family held a funeral service for her on Thursday, September 25, at Gray Mortuary in Pelzer, followed by a burial at Washington Baptist Church Cemetery. In her memory, the family requested that donations be made to the Washington Baptist Church Building Fund or the American Diabetes Association.
