In the quiet early morning hours of November 19, 2017, a verbal dispute tragically escalated, ending the life of 33-year-old Marquita Latasha Mobley in her Cayce, South Carolina, apartment. A female, she was a mother to a young child and was known by friends and family for her outgoing and sweet personality.
Living with her boyfriend, 29-year-old Derrick Davon Sligh, the couple became embroiled in an argument that would have devastating consequences.
Sligh produced a handgun and shot Mobley in their bedroom. After she fell to the floor wounded, he walked into the living room and opened fire on her brother, 29-year-old Jirmane Mobley, who was seated on the couch. Sligh then returned to the bedroom and shot Marquita Mobley again, inflicting fatal wounds. In total, she was shot five times. All of this occurred while her 10-year-old child was in the home. The child bravely called 911 for help.
After his violent rampage, where he emptied his twelve-round handgun, Sligh fled the apartment and disposed of the murder weapon. His freedom was short-lived, as a manhunt led to his capture in neighboring Richland County later that same day. The attack left Jirmane Mobley seriously injured and paralyzed.
Derrick Davon Sligh ultimately pleaded guilty to the murder of Marquita Mobley and the attempted murder of her brother. In October 2018, a judge sentenced him to 40 years in prison for murder and a concurrent 30-year sentence for attempted murder. Under the terms of his sentence, Sligh is not eligible for parole.
