On a warm Saturday evening in Philadelphia, on July 26, 2025, a birthday celebration tragically turned into a scene of violence. Friends and coworkers had gathered on the 1900 block of West Hunting Park Avenue for a barbecue when an argument between two men escalated. The dispute quickly became physical and then erupted in gunfire, leading to the death of 29-year-old Nyfik Johnson, a Black male.
In the ensuing chaos, another man, Quron Ross-Weems, was also fatally shot while reportedly trying to de-escalate the initial conflict.
Amid the panic and gunfire, as Johnson was attempting to provide aid to one of the gunshot victims, more shots were fired. A man named Lonzell McDaniel, 20, allegedly came out of his house and began shooting down the street. It was during this second wave of gunfire that Johnson was struck multiple times in the body and head. Police who responded to the scene transported him to Temple University Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The violence also left a 26-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her arm and a 7-year-old girl with a graze wound to her head; both survived.
In the aftermath of the deadly shooting, the Philadelphia Police Department's Homicide Unit launched an investigation that led to the identification of three suspects. Lonzell McDaniel was arrested and charged with murder, illegal firearm possession, and other related offenses. He was held without bail at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility. Arrest warrants were also issued for two other men, 25-year-old Lawrence Coleman and 29-year-old Virgil Williams, who were considered armed and dangerous. Authorities offered a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the remaining suspects.
