On a Sunday evening in North Philadelphia, a domestic dispute tragically escalated, claiming the life of Direll Skipworth, a 49-year-old Black/African American man. The incident unfolded on August 17, 2025, inside a residence on the 1500 block of North Gratz Street. An argument between Skipworth and his girlfriend took a fatal turn when her son intervened.
The verbal altercation between the couple intensified, drawing the attention of the woman's son.
A physical fight then broke out between Skipworth and the young man. In the heat of the moment, the son allegedly produced a firearm and shot Skipworth multiple times. The gunshots struck Skipworth in the chest, back, and leg.
After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene. Emergency services were called, and police arrived at the home just before 9:30 p.m. to find Skipworth gravely wounded in the vestibule. He was rushed to Temple University Hospital but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 9:54 p.m.
In the days following the shooting, the investigation progressed quickly. The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Kenneth Warren, surrendered to the authorities. He was subsequently charged in connection with the killing of Direll Skipworth. Officials confirmed that the deadly confrontation stemmed from the domestic dispute involving his mother and her boyfriend.
