In the small town of Millville, Pennsylvania, the life of 17-year-old Carter J. Conklin was cut tragically short on September 18, 2025. A senior at Millville High School, Carter was known for his intelligence, creativity, and love of music, participating in the school chorus. He was found deceased in his home on Engle Road with a single gunshot wound to the head.
The Columbia County Coroner swiftly ruled his death a homicide, launching an investigation by the state police.
The community was shaken by the news of the violent death of the young man. The investigation soon focused on someone within Carter's own home. Days later, Adam Bartosic, the 16-year-old son of his mother's live-in boyfriend, was arrested and charged with criminal homicide. Both teenagers were students at Millville Area High School. Bartosic, who turned 17 the day after the charges were filed, was taken into custody and held in the Columbia County Prison without bail.
Court documents revealed a chilling backstory to the tragic event. It is alleged that the shooting may have been planned, with the suspect, who has autism, reportedly having searched online for ways to kill. According to the arrest affidavit, Carter's mother had expressed concerns about Bartosic's aggressive behavior towards her and her children in the week leading up to the shooting, stating that he had told her he hated them and did not want to live with them. On the morning of the incident, after noticing Carter was not with his younger sister waiting for the school bus, Bartosic's father questioned his son about Carter's whereabouts, to which Adam denied any wrongdoing. Aaron Bartosic then discovered Carter in the basement, bleeding from his ear. Despite the suspect's denial of involvement during police interviews, evidence found on his cell phone reportedly indicated planning related to killings. A neighbor also reported hearing what they believed to be gunshots around 12:30 a.m. that morning. Adam Bartosic was charged as an adult and awaited a preliminary hearing scheduled for the end of September.
