In the rural landscape of Adair County, Oklahoma, between the small communities of Westville and Proctor, the life of 57-year-old Carl Benjamin Hutchison, a White/Caucasian male, was brought to a violent end on May 30, 2025. The events of that day were prefaced by an earlier altercation involving Hutchison's adult stepson, who was reportedly attacked with a sledgehammer on a rural road outside Westville.
This assault, which resulted in the stepson requiring emergency medical attention, allegedly involved multiple individuals, including a neighbor named Alan Michael Becker.
Following the attack on his stepson, Hutchison drove to Becker's property. According to investigators, Becker had placed a 911 call claiming a man was at his door threatening his family. The investigation by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, however, suggests that after finding no one at the door, Hutchison was returning to his truck to leave. At this point, his exit was allegedly blocked by Becker, who was operating a tractor. It is believed that while Hutchison remained inside his vehicle, Becker fired multiple shots through the windshield, fatally wounding him.
In the aftermath of the incidents, charges were filed against Alan Michael Becker in relation to the sledgehammer assault on Hutchison's stepson. These charges included conjoint robbery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, malicious injury to property, and feloniously pointing a firearm. A second individual was also later charged in connection with this assault. However, as of late July 2025, no charges had been filed in the shooting death of Carl Hutchison, despite investigators stating there was probable cause for a murder charge. The case has also raised questions of jurisdiction due to the potential involvement of tribal citizens associated with the Cherokee Nation.
