Just after midnight on August 9, 2025, Toledo police were called to the 600 block of East Central Avenue, where they found 31-year-old Leonel Avila Rodriguez, a man, outside a home with gunshot wounds. Officers had been dispatched around 12:49 a.m.; Rodriguez died at the scene. A second person was also shot but suffered only a minor injury. An autopsy later determined Rodriguez died of multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Lucas County deputy coroner.
In the days that followed, detectives identified a suspect and, on August 15, obtained a murder warrant for 18-year-old Carlos Ignacio Ramirez. Police and local reports said Ramirez, of the 600 block of East Central Avenue, was charged with murder and felonious assault in connection with the shooting that killed Rodriguez and injured the second victim. Authorities asked anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers as the investigation continued. As of those August reports, Ramirez was being sought by police; subsequent arrest information was not announced in the cited coverage.
Rodriguez’s killing was recorded among the city’s gun-violence deaths and noted by community memorials that track local victims. The case remained a homicide investigation, with police seeking tips to piece together what led to the burst of gunfire outside the East Central Avenue address shortly before 1 a.m.
