On the night of April 22, 2025, in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx, 35-year-old John Medina was caught in a burst of gunfire that would ultimately claim his life. The shooting occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. near the intersection of Bruckner Boulevard and East 136th Street. Medina, a male resident of the Bronx, sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his torso.
A second man, aged 42, was also struck by the gunfire, suffering a wound to the groin.
Both injured men were transported by private means to Lincoln Hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical staff, John Medina succumbed to his severe injuries and was pronounced deceased the following day, April 23, 2025. The second victim's injuries were considered non-life-threatening. The motive for the shooting has not been publicly disclosed by authorities.
Following a month-long investigation into the fatal shooting, the New York City Police Department apprehended two suspects in late May. The individuals taken into custody were identified as 33-year-old Raul Camuez of the Bronx and 37-year-old Marcus Toolsie of New Jersey. Both men are now facing charges of murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the death of John Medina and the assault on the second individual. The arrests brought a measure of progress to a case that had left a community searching for answers. The legal proceedings against Camuez and Toolsie are pending.
