In the late hours of a Friday night in Albuquerque, New Mexico, a dispute over something as trivial as a parking space escalated into a tragedy that ended the life of 22-year-old Carlos Ochoa. On August 22, 2025, Ochoa had driven a group of young women to the Effingbar and Grill on Sequoia Road NW for a birthday celebration. The evening took a fatal turn around 10:30 p.m.
in the parking lot of the establishment.
An argument erupted when Ochoa pulled his vehicle into a parking spot that another man, later identified as 38-year-old David Casarez, had been waiting for. The verbal disagreement quickly intensified, with witnesses stating that Casarez initiated a physical altercation. The conflict spiraled as women from both vehicles also became involved in the fight. In the midst of the chaos, Casarez reportedly retrieved a handgun from his vehicle.
According to witness accounts, Casarez not only used the firearm to shoot Ochoa but also struck Ochoa's girlfriend with the weapon. After an initial volley of three shots caused Ochoa to fall to the ground, there was a brief pause. As Ochoa attempted to sit up, Casarez allegedly fired a final, fatal shot. Police arrived to find Carlos Ochoa lying face up beside his car with multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the incident, David Casarez himself called 911 to report that he had shot someone, claiming he acted in self-defense and that Ochoa had pointed a gun at him. However, investigators were unable to corroborate the presence of a weapon on Ochoa. Casarez was subsequently arrested and charged with an open count of murder and five counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. He was booked into the Metro Detention Center in the early morning hours of August 24, 2025.
