On February 1, 2017, 43-year-old Geovanis Garcia was found dead from gunshot wounds at the Sahara Motel in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Witnesses reported hearing an argument followed by gunshots around 11 a.m.

The Albuquerque Police Department launched a homicide investigation and identified Jorge Correa-Reyes as the primary suspect in Garcia's murder. On February 15, 2017, Correa-Reyes was apprehended after attempting to flee from officers.
