In the quiet community of Pittstown, New Jersey, a story of escalating fear and a tragic end unfolded for Lauren T. Semanchik, a 33-year-old female veterinarian known for her compassion. Her life was violently cut short on August 1, 2025, a consequence of what authorities have described as a targeted act of domestic violence. Alongside her, a new figure in her life, 29-year-old Tyler Webb, also lost his life.
The events of that fatal Friday evening began to surface when neighbors reported hearing gunshots and screams. Despite a police response, the source of the distress was not immediately located. It was not until the following day, Saturday, August 2, 2025, that the grim discovery was made at Lauren’s home on Upper Kingtown Road. Both she and Webb were found with apparent gunshot wounds.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on a suspect: Ricardo Jorge Santos, a sergeant first class with the New Jersey State Police and Lauren's ex-boyfriend.
The relationship had ended in September 2024, after which Lauren endured a period of relentless harassment and stalking from Santos. She had documented his disturbing behavior, which included planting recording devices in her home, putting water in her car's gas tank, and keying her vehicle. The fear she felt was palpable, expressed in text messages to Santos where she explicitly stated she felt threatened. Concerned for her safety, Lauren had installed a surveillance camera in her car, which ultimately captured footage of Santos following her on the day of the murders.
In the wake of the double homicide, Santos was found deceased in his vehicle in a park in Piscataway from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The weapon believed to have been used in the killings was recovered from his car, solidifying the case as a murder-suicide. The tragedy has since raised serious questions about the response of law enforcement to Lauren's prior pleas for help. Her family has stated that she attempted to file a restraining order and had reached out to the Franklin Township Police Department for assistance, but her calls for help went unanswered. This has led to the suspension of the police chief and a sergeant, and the Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office has taken over the department amidst an ongoing investigation into their handling of the case.
