In the early morning hours of June 22, 2025, a violent outbreak occurred in the historic 18th and Vine Jazz District of Kansas City, Missouri, claiming the life of Ty’rick D. Henry, a 26-year-old male. The shooting took place shortly after 2:00 a.m., following the conclusion of the local Juneteenth Heritage Festival, a celebration that had filled the area with attendees earlier that evening.
Officers from the Kansas City Police Department, who were already stationed nearby on patrol, witnessed a chaotic scene unfold as crowds of people began fleeing the intersection of 19th Street and Vine Street, screaming that someone was armed and firing a weapon.
Upon rushing toward the sound of gunfire to intervene, law enforcement discovered Henry unresponsive at the scene, suffering from fatal gunshot wounds. Despite the arrival of emergency medical personnel, he was pronounced dead before he could be transported to a hospital. The violence that claimed Henry's life also left a trail of collateral damage; five other individuals—four men and one woman—sustained injuries and were transported to medical facilities by private vehicles. Among the wounded was 24-year-old Jalin X. Brewer, who succumbed to his injuries days later, raising the death toll of the incident to two. Investigators determined that the shooting stemmed from an escalating disagreement among a large group of people that rapidly spiraled out of control.
Authorities quickly identified and apprehended a suspect in connection with the chaotic discharge of weaponry that night. Police arrested Leonard L. Holman after observing him allegedly retrieving a firearm from his waistband and firing it into the air multiple times. Holman attempted to flee when officers ordered him to drop the weapon but was taken into custody shortly after. He was subsequently charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm under Blair’s Law—a regulation prohibiting the reckless firing of guns within city limits—and resisting arrest. During the investigation, Holman claimed to detectives that he had fired his weapon into the air in an effort to protect himself during the melee. The incident marked a somber turn for the community, transforming a weekend of cultural celebration into a crime scene investigation.
