On May 29, 2025, a dispute between a landlord and his tenant in a Las Vegas home culminated in the death of 39-year-old Steven Lucchesi. A white male, Lucchesi was fatally shot multiple times following an attempt to evict one of his tenants. The incident occurred in the afternoon, at approximately 4:45 p.m., in a residence located in the 3600 block of North Campbell Road.
Responding to a 911 call from another tenant, police arrived to find Lucchesi in the kitchen, lying face down with multiple gunshot wounds to his back. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The ensuing investigation quickly identified Christopher Rainey, 37, as the suspect. Rainey was one of several tenants living in the home that Lucchesi also resided in and owned. According to police reports, Lucchesi had been in the process of evicting Rainey, who was reportedly behind on his rent. On the day of the shooting, a verbal altercation over the eviction notice escalated. Another roommate reported hearing loud bangs shortly after a conversation about the eviction between Lucchesi and Rainey. Evidence at the scene, including close-contact injuries and bullet impacts on the floor beneath the victim's body, suggested that Lucchesi was lying face down when he was shot.
Christopher Rainey was arrested at the scene and later booked at the Clark County Detention Center on suspicion of open murder and assault with a deadly weapon. During the investigation, a Glock 45 semi-automatic handgun was recovered from a backpack in Rainey's bedroom. The rounds in the loaded gun were a match to the cartridges found in the kitchen where the shooting took place. In the days following his arrest, Rainey made his initial court appearance.
