In the evening hours of June 18, 2025, the life of 53-year-old Huey Dewayne Sonnier Sr. was tragically cut short in a fatal shooting in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Around 9:04 p.m., police responded to a call at the corner of Canocicus and Navajo streets, where they found Sonnier suffering from a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, but tragically, he later died from his injuries.
The subsequent investigation by the Baton Rouge Police Department revealed that the
shooting had actually taken place a block away from where Sonnier was discovered, in the 2700 block of Calumet Street. For months, the case remained under active investigation as detectives worked to piece together the events of that night and identify who was responsible for Sonnier's death.
A significant breakthrough came in October 2025, approximately four months after the shooting. The Baton Rouge Police Department announced the arrest of 55-year-old Henry Ray Thomas in connection with Sonnier's murder. At the time he was charged, Thomas was already in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on an unrelated matter. He was subsequently booked on charges of second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon for his alleged involvement in the death of Huey Sonnier.
