Aiyanna Williams, a 21-year-old female, was fatally wounded in a shooting in the early morning hours of Saturday, September 27, 2025. A senior at Stephens College, Williams was a dedicated nursing student and a talented volleyball player, known for her kindness and generosity.
The incident unfolded in downtown Columbia when a dispute between individuals unknown to Williams escalated into
violence. In the ensuing chaos, a man opened fire into a crowd, striking Williams and two other bystanders who were not involved in the altercation. Emergency services responded to the scene around 1:40 a.m. and transported the victims to the University Hospital. Despite medical efforts, Williams succumbed to her injuries. In a final act of selflessness, she remained on life support to fulfill her wish of being an organ donor.
Shortly after the shooting, law enforcement apprehended a suspect, identified as 23-year-old Misael Covarrubias. He was taken into custody and subsequently faced multiple charges, including second-degree murder, first-degree assault, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon. Covarrubias is being held without bond at the Boone County Jail. In a subsequent court appearance, he pleaded not guilty to the charges. The case is set to proceed through the justice system, with his next court appearance scheduled for a status hearing in January.
