In the late summer of 2025, the community of Vicksburg, Mississippi, was shaken by the tragic death of 14-year-old Jazachary Williams. A young man known for his smile, Williams was a freshman at Vicksburg High School and a member of the junior varsity football team, just beginning to find his own way in the world.
On the afternoon of Sunday, September 7, 2025, Vicksburg Police officers were called to The Park at Milestone Apartments on Common Circle. There they found Williams with a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to the Children's Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi, for treatment. Despite medical efforts, Jazachary Williams passed away from his injuries on Wednesday, September 10, 2025.
Following the shooting, law enforcement identified and arrested a suspect, 15-year-old Ramonta May. Initially, May was charged with aggravated assault, and his bond was set at $350,000. However, after Williams's death, the charges against May were upgraded to second-degree murder. In light of the more severe charge, a judge increased his bond to $450,000.
The news of the young teen's death and the arrest of another teenager sent ripples of sorrow and concern through the Vicksburg community. At Vicksburg High School, where both boys were students, the football team planned to honor Jazachary Williams and dedicate the remainder of their season to his memory.
