In the bright light of a late May morning in Baltimore, a life was tragically cut short in a sudden burst of violence. Bryant Breland, a 42-year-old Black man, was shot and killed on May 31, 2025, during an altercation that unfolded in the 600 block of Cherry Hill Road. The incident, which took place outside a Family Dollar store, sent shockwaves through the local community.
The events leading to Breland's death began with a confrontation that was captured on surveillance footage.
An argument between Breland and a Family Dollar employee, identified as 39-year-old Braxton Day, quickly escalated. In a tragic turn of events, Day allegedly drew a handgun and fired at Breland, inflicting a fatal wound. A Baltimore Police officer on patrol nearby heard the gunshot and was the first to respond to the scene, where Breland was found with a critical gunshot wound to his body. Despite being rushed to a local hospital, his life could not be saved.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Day fled the scene in an attempt to evade capture. Investigators later discovered that he had allegedly discarded the weapon under a nearby car and hidden his jacket and a bag in the cellar of a house on a neighboring road.
