On the night of June 14, 2025, Eduardo Alexander Alvarado Urrea, a 20-year-old male from Silver Spring, Maryland, was fatally shot in what police have described as a highway ambush. The incident occurred on eastbound Interstate 70, near Route 27 in Mount Airy. Urrea was a passenger in a 2018 GMC Sierra pickup truck with five other men at the time of the shooting.
The group had just left an event at the Frederick Fairgrounds around 11:40 p.m. when another vehicle reportedly pulled alongside their truck and opened fire. Urrea was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pickup was also struck by gunfire and was transported to a trauma center for his injuries. Another passenger was evaluated by medical personnel at the scene but declined treatment, while the remaining three occupants were unharmed.
Following an investigation led by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit, two suspects were identified and taken into custody on June 29, 2025. Francisco Javier Sanchez-Juarez, 28, and Jeffrey Josue Diaz, 24, both from Howard County, were arrested without incident. They have since been charged with first-degree murder and multiple firearm-related offenses.
Both Sanchez-Juarez and Diaz are being held without bond at the Frederick County Detention Center. The motive for the shooting is still under investigation, and authorities have asked for anyone with information or dashcam footage from the time of the incident to come forward.
