In the summer of 2025, a senseless act of violence cut short the life of 65-year-old Gregory Hill of Southfield, Michigan. On the afternoon of Thursday, July 31, 2025, Hill was diligently performing his duties as a maintenance worker at the Devon Park Apartments on Crooks Road in Royal Oak. A heated verbal altercation erupted in the parking lot between a tenant and another individual.
Witnesses reported that the tenant, identified as 32-year-old Nathaniel Joshua-Olsen Rockwell, escalated the confrontation by retrieving a handgun from his vehicle.
As the other person involved in the dispute fled, Rockwell turned his attention to Hill, who was in the vicinity but not directly involved in the argument. It is believed that Hill was attempting to call 911 when Rockwell opened fire. First responders from the Royal Oak Fire Department arrived to render aid, but Hill succumbed to his injuries at the scene. He was remembered by his family as a hardworking General Motors retiree who took the maintenance job simply because he enjoyed staying busy and helping people.
Royal Oak police officers responded to the scene and quickly took Rockwell into custody without further incident. He was a tenant of the apartment complex. Following an investigation, Rockwell was charged with one count of first-degree murder, three counts of felony firearm, and two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon. He was arraigned and denied bond. Reports indicated that Rockwell had no prior criminal convictions. The community was left to mourn the loss of a beloved family man and helpful neighbor, with residents of the apartment complex creating a memorial in his honor.
