In the hours and days that followed, police said a motive had not been determined, and the killing of Quan Vaughn, 19, remained under active investigation. By mid-July, the case took shape with charges. The St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office charged two men with first-degree murder in the death of Quan Vaughn, 19: John D. Davis Jr., 24, of Washington Park, and Jovon O. Hamburg 23, of East St. Louis. Authorities warned both should be considered armed and dangerous and asked the public for help as warrants were issued.
Days later, a break came in a neighboring town. On July 18, 2025, after an overnight standoff at an apartment near the Wood River Police Station, officers arrested John D. Davis without incident.
