In a tragic and senseless act of violence, 17-year-old Katelynn Strate, a female from Ponchatoula, Louisiana, lost her life following a road rage incident. At the time of her death, she was seven months pregnant.
On the morning of August 24, Strate was a passenger in a Ford Expedition with two other individuals, including her boyfriend. They were driving on Old Hoover Road near Ponchatoula when they encountered 54-year-old Berry West, who was driving a silver Dodge truck.
An altercation ensued between the two vehicles, involving tailgating and brake-checking. The situation escalated when West fired a single round into the Expedition, striking Strate in the head. The driver of the Expedition, realizing she had been shot, immediately drove her to a nearby hospital and called 911.
Emergency medical personnel rushed to save both Katelynn and her unborn child. Doctors performed an emergency cesarean section and successfully delivered her baby boy. Despite the efforts to save her, Katelynn succumbed to her injuries and passed away. Her family made the decision for her to be an organ donor.
The alleged shooter, Barry West, was arrested and now faces a charge of second-degree murder. In addition to the murder charge, he is also facing three counts of attempted second-degree murder, one count of illegal use of a weapon, and one count of obstruction of justice. West initially claimed that the occupants of the other vehicle had shot at him first, but investigators found no evidence of a weapon in their vehicle.
