In April 2013, the life of 39-year-old April Vander Linden, a female resident of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, was tragically cut short in her own home. On April 23, she was found shot to death, having sustained wounds to her chest and head. The ensuing investigation quickly focused on Ryan Pourciau, who was then 18 years old and the ex-boyfriend of Vander Linden's 16-year-old daughter.
The day after the discovery of Vander Linden's body, Pourciau was located hiding under the daughter's bed within the victim's home.
The motive for this violent act was rooted in a turbulent teenage romance that April Vander Linden had tried to end. The relationship between Pourciau and her daughter had been fraught with conflict, leading to legal interventions. Pourciau had previously been arrested on child pornography charges for posting images of the girl after they broke up. Following threatening phone calls allegedly made by Pourciau, Vander Linden had secured a protective order against him on behalf of her daughter. In October 2015, a jury found Ryan Pourciau, then 20, guilty of the second-degree murder of April Vander Linden. However, the prosecution presented evidence of Pourciau's threatening behavior and the protective order. Following his conviction, Pourciau was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a legal conclusion to the tragic death of a mother who had sought to protect her child.
