In the late summer of 2025, the quiet community of Shelbyville, Kentucky, was unsettled by the death of Timothy Lee Ethington, a 58-year-old White male. On the evening of Wednesday, August 20th, deputies from the Shelby County Sheriff's Office were called to a home in the Spring Oaks Estates neighborhood after a person was reported to be unresponsive. Inside, they discovered Ethington, who was pronounced dead at the scene. While he was found on a Wednesday, the county coroner believed he had likely been killed the previous evening. The investigation into his death was quickly classified as a homicide.
Investigators initially noted that there were no signs of a forced entry into Ethington's residence, leading them to believe he knew his killer or killers and that the attack was targeted. This theory was later reinforced by the investigation, which suggested the incident began as a robbery that tragically escalated. The community, where Ethington was known for his generosity, responded with numerous tips that aided law enforcement. Detectives appealed to the public for any surveillance footage and used cellphone data and Ring camera video to piece together the events leading to the murder.
Within weeks, the investigation led to several arrests. On September 8, 2025, authorities announced that three individuals had been charged with murder. Madison Greenwell, a 21-year-old from Shelbyville, and her 23-year-old boyfriend, Jeremiah James of Louisville, were apprehended in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee. They were found in a stolen vehicle after license plate readers flagged it. The third suspect, 21-year-old Rodney Isgrigg Jr. of Jeffersonville, Indiana, was arrested in Louisville. Investigators revealed that Greenwell knew Ethington and had contacted him on the evening of the crime, using their connection to gain entry to his home with the intent to rob him.
The investigation continued to develop, and on October 1, a fourth suspect was arrested in connection with the crime. Levi Jones, 24, of Louisville, was taken into custody in Nashville and also charged with murder. As the case progressed, James and Greenwell were also identified as suspects in a separate burglary in Shelbyville. While some of the involved parties reportedly told investigators the murder was not supposed to happen, all four suspects faced charges for their roles in the violent act that took Ethington's life. James, Greenwell, and Isgrigg awaited extradition to Shelby County to face the charges against them.
