In the summer of 2025, the life of Destiny Dustin Voss, a 28-year-old White/Caucasian male, was tragically cut short in Topeka, Kansas. A Navy veteran who had served his country with pride, Voss was known for his vibrant personality and the joy he brought to those around him. After his honorable discharge, he continued to protect others through a career in security. He was a loving husband and father to three children.
His life, however, took a devastating turn on the night of July 6, 2025.
That evening, in what was marked as the city's ninth homicide of the year, Voss sustained a critical gunshot wound in the 3200 block of SW Randolph. He was rushed to a local hospital just before 11:30 p.m., but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he died a short time later. His death left his family, including his wife, three children, parents, and siblings, to grapple with an immeasurable loss. The community he had served and been an active part of was left in mourning for a life taken too soon.
The investigation into the shooting led Topeka police to two suspects. In August, 18-year-old Avant Chambers was arrested and formally charged with first-degree murder, attempted aggravated robbery, and criminal discharge of a firearm in connection with Voss's death. A second suspect, 18-year-old Aaron Hura, was arrested in October and also faced a charge of first-degree murder. Hura was additionally charged with criminal discharge of a firearm and the distribution or possession with intent to distribute marijuana. Both teenagers were held on a one-million-dollar bond as they awaited further legal proceedings.
