A quiet evening on Interstate 80 on June 20, 2025, turned tragic in a sudden act of violence that left a 56-year-old Caucasian male, David Robert Morse, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident, which unfolded in rural Williamsburg near the Iowa/Johnson County line, also left his wife with serious injuries. Morse, from Holt, Michigan, was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the Iowa County Sheriff's Office, David and Tara Morse were traveling westbound on the
interstate at approximately 9 p.m. when the events leading to the fatal shooting began. Investigators determined that David Morse shot his wife, Tara, with a handgun while they were in their vehicle. After the shooting, he pulled their vehicle onto the Exit 225 ramp and stopped before turning the gun on himself.
Emergency services were dispatched to the I-80 ramp following a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, authorities found David Morse deceased. His wife, 52-year-old Tara Elinor Morse, was discovered with serious gunshot injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. She ultimately survived the shooting.
The Iowa County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, the Williamsburg Police Department, the Iowa State Patrol, and the State Medical Examiner's Office, conducted a thorough investigation into the incident. The results of their investigation concluded that David Morse was the sole individual responsible for the shooting of his wife and his own subsequent death. No other suspects were sought in connection with the case. An autopsy for David Morse was scheduled to be performed by the State Medical Examiner's Office to officially determine the cause and manner of death.
