On a spring afternoon in Knoxville, Iowa, on April 9, 1980, the life of John Ernest Van Haaften, a 25-year-old White male, was tragically cut short. Van Haaften, a patrolman with the Pella Police Department, was on assignment as an undercover narcotics officer for the Knoxville Police Department. His youthful energy and dedication to his work were well-known, and he was remembered by his wife as someone who had "fire in his bones" and put 100 percent into everything he did.
Working deep
undercover, Van Haaften had arranged a drug buy at a residence in Knoxville. After successfully making the purchase at approximately 4:00 p.m., he moved in to arrest the individual involved. As he entered one of the rooms in the house, another person, a 17-year-old male, unexpectedly fired a. 410 gauge shotgun, striking Van Haaften in the chest. Despite the grievous wound, the dedicated officer managed to stumble out of the house and radio for backup before he collapsed.
The aftermath of the shooting saw a swift response from law enforcement. The investigation led to the identification of two main suspects. The 17-year-old who fired the fatal shot was apprehended and ultimately pleaded guilty to a charge of involuntary manslaughter. For his role in the death of Patrolman Van Haaften, he was sentenced to five years in prison. The other suspect, who had sold the drugs to the undercover officer, also faced justice, pleading guilty and receiving a prison sentence for their part in the events of that tragic day. At the time of his death, John Ernest Van Haaften was survived by his wife, who was expecting their child, and his daughter.
