On a spring afternoon in Knoxville, Iowa, on April 9, 1980, the life of John Ernest Van Haaften, a 25-year-old White male, was tragically cut short. Van Haaften, a patrolman with the Pella Police Department, was on assignment as an undercover narcotics officer for the Knoxville Police Department.
