On a spring afternoon in Knoxville, Iowa, on April 9, 1980, the life of John Ernest Van Haaften, a 25-year-old White male, was tragically cut short. Van Haaften, a patrolman with the Pella Police Department, was on assignment as an undercover narcotics officer for the Knoxville Police Department. His youthful energy and dedication to his work were well-known, and he was remembered by his wife as someone who had "fire in his bones" and put 100 percent into everything he did.
