On Labor Day, September 1, 2025, the life of 30-year-old Caucasian male, Cody Bush, was tragically cut short in Topeka, Kansas. In the early morning hours, at approximately 7:30 a.m., officers from the Topeka Police Department were dispatched to the 100 block of Northwest Holman Street following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Bush suffering from life-threatening injuries.
Despite the efforts of first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the homicide led police to identify a suspect in the fatal shooting. Eight days later, on September 9, 2025, authorities announced the arrest of 42-year-old Justin Shumway, also of Topeka. Shumway was subsequently booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections. He is facing charges of Murder in the 1st Degree and Aggravated Robbery in connection with Cody Bush's death. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have encouraged anyone with information to contact the Topeka Police Department or Shawnee County Crime Stoppers.
Cody Lane Bush was remembered as a vibrant and outgoing individual with a talent for words and a love for creative outlets such as drawing and skateboarding. He was a father to a son, Treyton, and was described as a beloved son, brother, and friend to many. His family and friends were a significant part of his life, and his passing has left a void in their lives. Funeral services were scheduled to be held on Friday, September 12, 2025, at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home in Topeka.
