A trip to the grocery store on a Monday afternoon turned tragic for Kalista Rae Hallberg, a 37-year-old Caucasian female from Letts, Iowa. On June 30, 2025, Hallberg was inside the Hy-Vee located at 2400 2nd Avenue in Muscatine when she was shot multiple times. The incident occurred at approximately 2:01 p.m., prompting numerous calls to emergency services.
When officers from the Muscatine Police Department and emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene, they found Hallberg with multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the store. One of her two children was with her at the time of the shooting.
The investigation quickly identified the suspect as 35-year-old Ian Antonio Hernandez of Davenport. Authorities determined that the shooting was not a random act of violence but rather stemmed from an ongoing domestic dispute between Hallberg and Hernandez. It was later reported that Hallberg had been trying to get away from Hernandez for years and had previously obtained a no-contact order against him.
After the shooting, Hernandez fled the scene in a red Chrysler minivan. Law enforcement officers later located his vehicle near the intersection of US Highway 61 and US Highway 38. As they approached the minivan, they discovered Hernandez in the driver's seat with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officers rendered immediate medical aid until paramedics arrived. Hernandez was transported to UnityPoint Health-Trinity Hospital in Muscatine before being airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. He later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. Due to the death of the suspect, no charges were filed in connection with Hallberg's murder, though the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident continued.
