In the early morning hours of a July Saturday in Indianapolis, the lives of two brothers were tragically cut short by gunfire. Twenty-four-year-old Wayland Coe and his 12-year-old brother, Izzy Offett, were found shot inside a car in a parking lot on West 38th Street. The shooting occurred around 4 a.m. on July 12, 2025. First responders arrived at the scene to find both brothers in critical condition.
They were rushed to nearby hospitals but ultimately succumbed to their injuries.
The family was left in a state of shock and profound grief. The boys' mother, Natysha Offett, had been preparing for a family trip to King's Island that same morning. When she realized her sons were not home, she grew concerned. Her daughter tracked Izzy's phone to the west side of the city. A subsequent call to the phone was answered by someone who informed them of the tragedy. The family's heartbreak was compounded by the fact that they had to identify their loved ones through black and white photographs provided by the coroner.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly led to a suspect. Nearly a day after the shooting, a witness emailed a detective with information identifying 19-year-old Anthony Bean as the shooter. The witness claimed that Bean fired multiple shots at the car after seeing Wayland Coe talking with a group of girls, which included Bean's girlfriend. Following this lead, detectives located and arrested Bean the day after the shooting.
Anthony Bean was formally charged with two counts of murder and two counts of intimidation. Court documents revealed that Bean had allegedly threatened his girlfriend and the witness to prevent them from speaking to the police. During his initial court appearance, the prosecutor highlighted the senselessness of the violence, stating that a 12-year-old had lost his life for no reason. Bean was jailed without bond as the legal proceedings against him commenced.
