The incident unfolded at the Carmel Creek apartment complex situated on Buford Highway, a bustling thoroughfare just northeast of Atlanta. It was here, amidst what began as a social gathering, that a fatal argument would erupt.

Carlos Meza Ignacio, described by some as a family friend. The two had been drinking together inside an apartment when a dispute arose concerning a firearm in Ignacio's possession. The disagreement escalated, leading to Ignacio allegedly shooting Cortez multiple times. The shooting reportedly occurred during a family gathering at the apartment of the victim's sister, tragically witnessed by his niece and nephews. First responders were called to the scene just before 3 a.m. and found Cortez on the floor with several gunshot wounds. Despite their efforts to render aid, his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the shooting, a manhunt for Jose Carlos Meza Ignacio was initiated, with police describing him as "armed and dangerous." The search concluded the following day, on Monday afternoon, when officers spotted Ignacio walking on Hickory Road in the neighboring city of Chamblee. He was taken into custody without incident and subsequently booked into the DeKalb County jail.
