Gerardo Cruz Cortez, 36, a Hispanic/Latino male, was shot and killed in the early hours of Sunday, August 17, 2025. He was found inside an apartment at the Carmel Creek complex along Buford Highway in Brookhaven, a city just northeast of Atlanta in DeKalb County. First responders attempted lifesaving measures but he died at the scene, and the killing was recorded among Atlanta-area gun violence losses that day.
