On the morning of Sunday, September 14, 2025, police responded to a call about a person down on Church Street. Upon arrival, they found 30-year-old Rashard Grier, who had been fatally shot. An investigation revealed that the incident likely occurred the previous night, with gunshot wounds to his face and stomach being the cause of death. Grier was a talented artist who loved to paint and draw, known for a vibrant personality and a smile that could brighten up a room. He leaves behind a daughter, his parents, and an older brother.

Then, in late October 2025, a significant breakthrough was made in the case. On October 29, 2025, the Clarkston Police Department announced the arrest of a suspect. Binyam Melese, 27, was taken into custody in an abandoned apartment at the Clarkston Station apartments. He was subsequently charged with malice murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime in connection with the shooting death of Rashard Grier. Melese was then booked into the DeKalb County Jail.
