Samantha Cicone, a 39-year-old White female from Middleburg, Florida, was killed on September 15, 2025, when an armed intruder forced his way into her family’s home in the Oakleaf/Middleburg area before dawn. According to investigators, the attacker was a stranger to the household who had arrived with his wife, left her in their vehicle, and then confronted a teenager outside, compelling him at gunpoint to take him inside. Once in the home, the gunman opened fire on the family; Cicone moved to defend her loved ones but was shot multiple times and died at the scene.

Authorities identified the assailant as 45-year-old Mauricio Vasco Lopez. Inside the house, Lopez first shot a 21-year-old woman and then a 48-year-old man. As Cicone attempted to arm herself with a shotgun, Lopez shot her before she could return fire. In the chaos, a 16-year-old boy managed to seize the shotgun and fire two rounds, critically wounding Lopez; the suspect later died at a hospital. The 21-year-old victim was left in critical condition, while others were treated for their injuries. Officials have said there was no known prior connection between Lopez and the residents, and the motive remained unclear in the immediate aftermath.

Because the sole suspect died of his wounds, there were no arrests in the case. Clay County authorities characterized the rampage as a random, unprovoked home invasion and publicly credited the teen’s actions with ending the threat inside the home. Family members later spoke about Cicone’s final moments and the devastation left behind, and community fundraisers were launched in her memory as loved ones grieved a sister remembered for her calm, protective presence.
