On a warm Sunday afternoon, the life of 20-year-old Najii Mercer was tragically cut short. The young Black/African American male from Oxon Hill, Maryland, was in the 2600 block of Birney Place SE in Washington, D.C., on September 7, 2025, when gunfire erupted. Shortly after 3 p.m., officers from the Metropolitan Police Department's Seventh District were dispatched to the scene following reports of the shooting.
