On a summer afternoon in Tempe, Arizona, a road rage incident escalated into a fatal shooting that claimed the life of 29-year-old Steven Bevan. The white male was driving his Dodge Challenger with his two young sons, aged eight and nine, on July 1, 2025. A confrontation with another driver, 46-year-old Dustin Jackson, who was in a black GMC Sierra pickup truck with his own six-year-old daughter, unfolded over several blocks near Priest Drive and Warner Road.
The dispute reached its
tragic conclusion when Bevan stopped his car in front of Jackson's truck at a red light. Unarmed, Bevan exited his vehicle and walked towards the driver's side of the pickup. From inside his truck, Jackson fired a single shot that struck Bevan in the chest. The incident was partially recorded on video by one of Bevan's sons. Police later reported that no weapons were found in Bevan's possession or in his vehicle.
Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 12:15 p.m., and Bevan was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Jackson remained at the scene and was taken into custody by Tempe police. He was initially arrested on charges including first-degree premeditated murder and drive-by shooting. Jackson claimed he acted in self-defense, stating that he feared for his and his daughter's lives. He told investigators that Bevan's vehicle had been swerving into his lane and that after stopping, Bevan approached his truck waving his arms and appearing to be swearing. Jackson said he saw Bevan reach around his back with his right hand and, at that point, he fired his weapon.
In the weeks that followed, the case was presented to a Maricopa County grand jury. Despite the initial charges, the grand jury declined to indict Dustin Jackson on homicide and weapons-related charges. However, prosecutors did secure indictments against Jackson for possession or use of narcotic drugs and possession or use of drug paraphernalia, which were reportedly found in his truck at the time of the incident. The decision not to indict on the more serious charges left Steven Bevan's family grieving and without a homicide prosecution in the case.
