In a tragic turn of events stemming from a history of domestic violence, 47-year-old Michelle Ohnesorgen Johnson was killed in a murder-suicide in Tucson, Arizona. The incident, which also resulted in the death of her partner, Michael Martinez Duran, age 48, unfolded in a midtown home and was discovered on September 8, 2025.
Prior to the fatal shooting, Duran had a documented history of violence against Johnson.
In May of the same year, he was arrested for allegedly strangling her to the point of unconsciousness, striking her in the face, and threatening her with a gun. This was not the first instance of such violence, as he had also been arrested for a similar assault involving strangulation the previous November.
Despite the serious nature of the charges and objections from the county attorney, Duran was granted pretrial release. This decision came after Johnson wrote a letter to the judge requesting his release. Shortly after he was let go, Duran shot and killed Johnson before taking his own life. The case has since highlighted concerns about the handling of repeat domestic violence offenders within the justice system.
