In the early morning hours of April 24, 2008, Santos Mercado, a 45-year-old Hispanic male, was awakened by the sound of his Chihuahuas barking and a rustling outside his Las Vegas home. A construction worker known for his generosity and for opening his home to family and friends, Mercado went to his front door. This act of opening his door proved to be fatal. An assailant shot him twice, once in the stomach and once in the shoulder, at approximately 12:30 a.m. Mercado’s longtime girlfriend and his teenage daughter were jolted awake by his screams.
The scene inside the one-story house on Harris Avenue, near Lamb Boulevard, told the story of a violent, early morning struggle. Smears of blood marked the hallway walls leading to his bedroom, and blood had splattered near the bottom of a bathroom door. Shotgun blast holes peppered his bedroom door, a chilling reminder of the violence that had shattered the peace of the home he had moved into with his family only the December prior. More than twenty members of Mercado’s extended family gathered at the house later that day, mourning the unexpected loss of a man they described as fun-loving and who enjoyed hosting barbecues and serving traditional Mexican dishes.
The investigation into the shooting revealed that this was not the first attempt on Mercado's life. Just five weeks earlier, in March, an assailant had managed to get inside the house and fired several shots at Mercado as he was preparing to leave for work in the early morning. He was not hit in that incident, but pellet marks from the shotgun blasts remained on a kitchen wall. Police believed the two incidents were related but stated they had no indication that Mercado was involved in any criminal activity, describing him as a man who was simply "working hard every day."
Detectives were left with several potential theories but no suspects. One possibility was a case of mistaken identity. Family members reported that the previous residents of the home had been involved with drugs, leading to speculation that the attack could have been a drug deal gone wrong, intended for someone else. Another angle investigators considered involved a former girlfriend of Mercado's from a decade earlier. According to Mercado's niece, this woman had started calling him in September, asking to meet in strange places at night. Despite these leads, no arrests were ever announced in the killing of Santos Mercado, and the identity of his killer or killers remains a mystery. His family was left to grapple with their grief and the unanswered questions surrounding his violent death.
