In the early morning hours of April 24, 2008, Santos Mercado, a 45-year-old Hispanic male, was awakened by the sound of his Chihuahuas barking and a rustling outside his Las Vegas home. A construction worker known for his generosity and for opening his home to family and friends, Mercado went to his front door. This act of opening his door proved to be fatal.
