In the late hours of a Tuesday night in Birmingham, Alabama, a dispute ended in the death of 33-year-old Tedarius Montez Seawright. The male victim died on September 9, 2025, in an apartment within the Elyton Village public housing community. The incident, which marked the city's 58th homicide of the year, unfolded around 11:50 p.m. when police received a call about a home break-in.
Upon arriving at the apartment on the 1400 block of 4th Court West, officers discovered Seawright
unresponsive with a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel were dispatched to the scene but pronounced him dead. Investigators learned that Seawright, who was the ex-boyfriend of the woman residing in the apartment, had entered her home without permission. Inside, a physical altercation broke out between Seawright and the woman's current boyfriend. During this confrontation, shots were fired, and Seawright was fatally wounded.
The shooter, identified as the resident's boyfriend, remained at the scene and waited for law enforcement to arrive. He was taken to police headquarters for questioning and placed on a 48-hour investigative hold while detectives presented the evidence to the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office. After a review of the circumstances, the district attorney's office ruled that the shooting was a justifiable homicide. Citing self-defense during a break-in, authorities announced that no criminal charges would be filed in connection with Seawright's death.
