On New Year's Day 2006, the community of Richmond, Virginia, was rocked by a horrific discovery that marked the beginning of a week-long crime spree. Kathryn Harvey, a 39-year-old female and co-owner of a beloved local toy store, was found murdered in her home alongside her husband, Bryan, 49, and their two young daughters, Stella, 9, and Ruby, 4. The family had been planning to host friends for a chili dinner when their lives were brutally cut short. Responding to a fire at the Harvey residence, authorities discovered the four victims in the basement, bound with electrical cord and tape. They had been beaten with a claw hammer and had their throats slit. An attempt was made to destroy the crime scene by setting the house on fire.
The investigation into the shocking murders quickly led to two suspects: Ricky Javon Gray and his nephew, Ray Joseph Dandridge. The duo had been looking for a house to rob when they noticed the Harveys' front door was open. After entering the home, they held the family captive in the basement. While Dandridge searched the house for valuables, Gray restrained Kathryn, Bryan, and their youngest daughter. When their older daughter, Stella, arrived home from a friend's house, Kathryn was briefly unbound to bring her downstairs. The perpetrators ultimately stole a laptop, a wedding ring, and a basket of cookies.
The break in the case came when police received a tip concerning Ashley Baskerville, an accomplice of Gray and Dandridge who had acted as a lookout during the Harvey murders. Tragically, Baskerville and her parents, Mary Baskerville-Tucker and Percyell Tucker, were also found murdered just days later. A crucial piece of evidence linking the crimes was Kathryn Harvey's wedding ring, which was found on Ashley Baskerville's finger.
Following their arrests, Gray and Dandridge were charged with multiple counts of capital murder. Dandridge eventually pleaded guilty to the murders of the Tucker-Baskerville family and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Ricky Gray stood trial for the murders of the Harvey family. His defense team argued that a history of childhood abuse and drug use, specifically PCP, diminished his responsibility for the crimes. However, the jury was not swayed and found him guilty on all five counts of capital murder after only 30 minutes of deliberation. Gray was subsequently sentenced to death for the murders of Stella and Ruby Harvey and received life sentences for the killings of their parents. After a series of failed appeals, Ricky Gray was executed by lethal injection on January 18, 2017.
