In the small town of Anaconda, Montana, the morning of August 1, 2025, was shattered by an act of violence that claimed the life of 64-year-old Nancy Lauretta Kelley, a White female, and three others. A retired nurse who had found a second calling as a bartender at the local Owl Bar, Kelley was known for her compassion and love of socializing. That fateful Friday, what began as a typical day at work ended in tragedy when a man opened fire inside the establishment.
The shooter, identified as 45-year-old Michael Paul Brown, was a resident who lived next door to the bar and was reportedly a regular patron. Investigators allege that prior to the shooting, Brown attempted to set the bar on fire. When that failed, he is said to have retrieved a rifle from his home and returned to the bar, where he shot and killed Kelley and three male patrons: Daniel Edwin Baillie, 59; David Allen Leach, 70; and Tony Wayne Palm, 74.
Authorities stated that Brown murdered the four individuals in "cold blood for no reason whatsoever."
Immediately following the shooting, Brown fled the scene, sparking a massive weeklong manhunt that involved approximately 250 federal, state, and local law enforcement officers. The search extended into the mountainous terrain west of Anaconda, causing concern among the residents of the tight-knit community. Brown, a military veteran who had served in the U.S. Army and Montana National Guard, was considered armed and dangerous. His family later disclosed that he had a long history of struggling with mental illness.
On August 8, 2025, a week after the deadly attack, the intensive search came to an end when a multi-agency task force captured Michael Paul Brown. He was found armed and taken into custody west of Anaconda. Brown was subsequently charged with four counts of murder, as well as arson, theft, and eluding police. He was held without the possibility of bail, and a trial date was set for January 12, 2026. The community was left to mourn the loss of Nancy Kelley, a beloved caregiver and social butterfly, whose life was tragically cut short.
