Police quickly responded to the scene. Vargas took two residents hostage in another apartment—on the fifth floor—for several hours. A SWAT team negotiated for a time, but ultimately stormed the building, ending the standoff by fatally shooting Vargas. The two hostages survived unharmed. There had been no arrests prior to the conclusion of the event—Pedro Alberto Vargas was the sole perpetrator, and he was killed during the police operation; hence, no suspect was ever arrested alive in connection with the killings.
