Belinda Worley, a 17-year-old high school senior from Hialeah, Florida, tragically lost her life on January 8, 1978. On that fateful evening, Belinda and her boyfriend, Brian Glenfeldt, also 17, left a Youth-for-Christ meeting with plans to meet friends at an ice cream parlor. However, they never arrived. The following morning, their bodies were discovered in a wooded area.
Brian had been shot in the head, chest, and arm, while Belinda was found several hundred yards away, partially clothed, and had been raped and shot in the back of the head.
The investigation into their deaths led to the arrest of John Errol Ferguson, a notorious criminal already linked to multiple murders in the Miami-Dade area. Ferguson, who had a history of posing as a police officer to commit his crimes, was apprehended on April 5, 1978. At the time of his arrest, he was found in possession of a .357 magnum, the same type of gun used in the murders of Belinda and Brian. Ferguson later confessed to the killings, admitting that he had accosted the couple by pretending to be a policeman.
Ferguson's criminal activities extended beyond the murders of Belinda and Brian. He was also convicted of the infamous Carol City murders, where he and his accomplices executed six people during a home invasion robbery in July 1977. This series of crimes marked one of the worst mass murders in Miami-Dade history. Ferguson's violent spree continued with the murder of an elderly couple in St. Petersburg, Florida, although he was never prosecuted for that crime.
The legal proceedings against Ferguson were lengthy and complex, involving numerous appeals and claims of mental illness. Despite expert testimony suggesting that Ferguson suffered from paranoia and delusions, other experts argued that he was faking his mental condition. Ultimately, the courts rejected his appeals, and Ferguson remained on death row for over three decades. His execution was finally carried out on October 16, 2013, bringing a measure of closure to the families of his many victims.
