In the summer of 2022, a domestic tragedy unfolded in Harper Woods, Michigan, resulting in the death of 42-year-old Flossie Nicole Bray. The incident, which also claimed the lives of her husband and her son's girlfriend, culminated in the arrest of her own child.
On the evening of July 10, 2022, authorities were called to a residence on Kenosha Street following a distressing 911 call from a woman who claimed she was being held hostage before the line disconnected amidst screams.
Upon arrival, police discovered a volatile scene that quickly escalated into a seven-hour standoff. During the standoff, Jonathan Welch, Bray's 23-year-old son, had barricaded himself inside the home. Neighbors reported seeing Welch drop his one-year-old son out of a window onto the grass while the house was on fire. The child was safely recovered by officers and taken to a hospital for treatment.
Inside the home, a horrific scene had unfolded. Welch had stabbed his mother, Flossie Bray, multiple times in the back with a butcher knife. He had also inflicted fatal blunt force trauma on his girlfriend, 22-year-old Zlayiah Frazier, and his stepfather, 70-year-old Robert Bray Jr. After allegedly setting a fire inside the residence and firing at police, Welch eventually emerged and was apprehended. Flossie Bray was transported to a local hospital but tragically succumbed to her injuries on July 16.
The investigation revealed a disturbing history of domestic violence. Just two days prior to the deadly rampage, Welch had been released from jail on a $10,000 bond. He had been charged with the violent torture and sexual assault of Zlayiah Frazier in a brutal attack that occurred on June 2. In that incident, he was accused of strangling her with an extension cord, pouring gasoline on her, and burning her with a hot metal spatula.
Following the triple homicide, Jonathan Welch was charged with three counts of first-degree murder, three counts of assault with intent to murder, one count of second-degree arson, seven counts of felonious assault, and six counts of felony firearm. In July of the following year, Welch pleaded guilty to the murders of his mother, his stepfather, and his girlfriend. He was subsequently sentenced to 45 to 70 years in prison for these crimes. This sentence was to be served after he completed a sentence of up to 30 years for the prior home invasion and torture of Zlayiah Frazier.
