Robin Murray O’Hair, a 30-year-old white female, was the adopted daughter and biological granddaughter of prominent atheist activist Madalyn Murray O’Hair. On August 27, 1995, Robin, along with her grandmother and uncle Jon Garth Murray, disappeared from Austin, Texas. The trio was last seen at their home and office, which served as the headquarters for the American Atheists organization. A note was later found on the door stating they had left town due to an emergency.
Over the following weeks, Robin and her family made strained phone calls to colleagues, but by late September, all communication ceased.
Investigators later discovered that Robin Murray O’Hair, her grandmother Madalyn and uncle Jon had been kidnapped by three men: David Waters, Gary Karr, and Danny Fry. Waters had previously worked for the American Atheists and harbored resentment after being fired for embezzling funds. The kidnappers used a ruse to gain entry to the family’s home, then transported them to San Antonio, Texas, where they were held captive in a hotel. During their captivity, the victims were coerced into transferring approximately $600,000 in gold coins.
Robin, a 30-year-old white female, was reportedly subjected to sexual advances by one of the kidnappers, Gary Karr, during the ordeal. According to later confessions, Robin may have been killed first, possibly during a sexual assault at the Warren Inn in San Antonio. However, the final account given by David Waters indicated that all three victims were murdered together on September 29, 1995, after being moved to a second hotel. Their bodies were dismembered and buried on a remote ranch in Texas. The remains were discovered in January 2001, and Robin’s identity was confirmed through dental records and DNA testing.
David Waters pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges and led authorities to the burial site as part of a plea deal. He was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison and died of lung cancer in 2003. Gary Karr, a career criminal and former cellmate of Waters, was convicted in 2000 on multiple charges including conspiracy to commit extortion and interstate transportation of stolen property. He was sentenced to life in prison. Danny Fry, the third accomplice, was also murdered—his mutilated body was found near the Trinity River in Dallas shortly after the O’Hair family’s disappearance.
The case remained a mystery for years until Waters’ confession and cooperation with federal agents revealed the full scope of the crime. Robin Murray O’Hair’s death, along with those of her family members, marked the tragic end of a high-profile and deeply disturbing criminal conspiracy.
