Wendell Hubbard was a 10-year-old Black boy who vanished into an ordinary October afternoon in Manhattan and was found dead on October 23, 1972, on the rooftop of an East Harlem tenement. His mother reported him missing after he didn’t come upstairs when called, and hours later the search ended in the starkest place a child could be found—above the building, exposed to the night air, where his body lay on the roof.
