On August 6, 1985, the body of 19-year-old white male Dennis Keith Medler was discovered behind Resthaven Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Houston, Texas. The condition of the body revealed a brutal and sadistic killing. The young man had been beaten, slashed with knives, and choked. His throat had been cut, his teeth were hammered out, one of his eyes was gouged from its socket, and his hair had been burned down to the scalp.
Authorities determined that the cause of death was likely a combination of strangulation and blood loss. The level of mutilation and the location of the body led investigators to initially suspect a ritualistic or symbolic motive.
As the investigation unfolded, law enforcement identified a group of teenagers who were allegedly involved in the killing. All of the suspects were reported to have an interest in Satanism, though authorities later clarified that the murder did not appear to be part of any organized cult ritual. Instead, the suspects reportedly killed Dennis Keith Medler, a 19-year-old white male, simply “to watch somebody die.” According to detectives, the group had discussed the plan for about a week before luring him to the field where the murder took place.
Five individuals were charged in connection with the killing. Among them were 17-year-old John-Michael Alexander Trimmer, 19-year-old Michael Gene Cravey, and 17-year-old Harold Glenn Smith. All were taken into custody, although Cravey was initially arrested in New Orleans before being returned to Houston. A 16-year-old boy was also held in the Harris County Juvenile Detention Center, and authorities were searching for a 16-year-old girl believed to have participated in the killing by setting the victim’s hair on fire.
Further investigation revealed that Harold Glenn Smith, a 19-year-old white male, was considered the ringleader of the group. He had a history of violent behavior and was linked to several other crimes, including the shooting death of 16-year-old Wayne Schubert and the stabbing of 25-year-old Ronald Monahan. Witnesses and informants described Smith as a self-proclaimed “high priest” among his peers, using his influence to orchestrate acts of violence. He was eventually sentenced to life in prison in August 1986.
