On September 21, 1992, the body of 29-year-old Regetter Martin, a female, was discovered near an interstate in Botte, Louisiana. A mother of three, Martin had a history of arrests for prostitution. Her death was one in a series of brutal killings of women in the New Orleans area between 1991 and 1996, crimes attributed to a serial killer who would come to be known as the 'Storyville Slayer.'
The investigation into the string of murders, including Martin's, was complex.
The victims were often left in remote locations, leading to the decomposition of evidence. In October 1992, a sketch of a possible suspect was released based on the description from a woman who survived an attack. This led to a brief pause in the slayings, but the killer soon resumed his activities. Over the years, several individuals have been considered persons of interest in the Storyville Slayer case. One man, Russell Ellwood, was convicted of one of the murders, but the others, including the death of Regetter Martin, officially remain unsolved. While he is a suspect in several of the other killings, no charges have been filed against him in connection with Martin's case. As of late 2021, there have been no arrests or convictions for the murder of Regetter Martin, leaving her family and community without answers or justice.
