The brutality of McDougall's murder was a key factor that eventually linked it to a known serial killer, Daniel Lee Siebert.
Siebert, a man with a long and violent criminal history, was identified as the suspect in McDougall's murder. At the time of her death, he was already a wanted man in connection with several other homicides across the United States. He had a previous conviction for manslaughter in Nevada in 1979 and was also wanted on assault charges in San Francisco. Siebert was adept at evading law enforcement, using aliases such as 'Daniel Spence' to hide his identity.
After a six-month manhunt, authorities tracked Siebert to a restaurant in Tennessee where he was working under an assumed name.
A phone call he made to a friend was traced, leading to his arrest. Following his capture, Siebert confessed to multiple murders, including that of Beatrice McDougall. He admitted that his motives for killing were tied to sex and robbery and claimed responsibility for as many as a dozen murders nationwide. Siebert was charged and convicted in several other high-profile murders, including the killing of a young mother and her two children in Alabama.
