On Halloween night in 1982, 13-year-old Kristi Lynn Vorak, a White female, vanished from her foster home in Tacoma, Washington. Just ten days after her birthday, she was seen for the last time leaving the residence and stepping out into the autumn evening. An unconfirmed sighting later placed her at a bus depot in Seattle, about 30 miles north of Tacoma, but this lead was never verified.
In the initial stages of the investigation, authorities treated her disappearance as a runaway case, although she had no history of running away. Kristi, who stood five feet three inches tall and weighed 110 pounds, had brown hair, hazel eyes, and a notable birth defect: her left middle finger was about an inch shorter than average.
For years, Kristi's case remained cold, with few leads to follow. However, the timing and location of her disappearance, happening in a region gripped by a string of murders, eventually drew the attention of the Green River Task Force. In May 1993, investigators officially added Kristi's name to the list of probable victims of the Green River Killer, later identified as Gary Ridgway. This connection was made primarily because she disappeared during the period when the serial killer was most active in the Seattle and Tacoma areas. The Pacific Northwest was living in fear as the bodies of young women began to be discovered along the Green River just months before Kristi went missing.
Despite the official link, some investigators and true crime researchers have questioned whether Kristi truly fits the profile of a Ridgway victim. At thirteen, she was significantly younger than most of his known victims, who were typically in their late teens or early twenties and often involved in prostitution. Kristi did not have a record for prostitution, though she was known to occasionally frequent the streets of Tacoma. When Gary Ridgway was arrested in 2001, advanced DNA testing linked him to several victims. He eventually pleaded guilty to 48 murders in a deal to avoid the death penalty, a deal that was contingent on his cooperation in King County cases.
Kristi disappeared from Pierce County, which means that if Ridgway had confessed to her murder, he could have faced a separate prosecution and potentially the death penalty, giving him a strong motive to stay silent about her case. When questioned about Kristi Vorak, Ridgway provided no information. No arrests have ever been made in her disappearance, and her body has never been found. Kristi Lynn Vorak remains on national missing persons databases, and though investigators believe she is deceased, her case is an unsolved mystery that continues to haunt the region.
