In the spring of 1981, the quiet community of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, was rocked by a brutal and shocking crime. Pamela Sue Barker, a white female, was found dead in April of that year. At the time, she had been living under the alias Michelle Lynn Pearson, a name adopted as part of the federal witness protection program. Her life, and that of her common-law husband, Marion Albert Pruett, was supposed to be a new beginning, shielded from a past that had led them to seek government
protection.
The circumstances of Pamela's death were particularly gruesome, painting a grim picture of her final moments. She had been brutally bludgeoned with a hammer, and her body was then set on fire in an attempt to conceal the horrific act. This violent crime marked the start of a multi-state crime spree by Pruett, who would later become known as a serial killer. The investigation into Barker's murder would ultimately unravel a series of violent crimes committed by a man who was meant to be under the government's watch.
Initially, investigators struggled to gather enough evidence to press charges in Barker's death. However, Pruett's violent rampage across several states, including Mississippi, Arkansas, and Colorado, soon brought him to the attention of law enforcement nationwide. Following his capture in Texas, where he was found with a. 38-caliber revolver and stolen license plates, the full scope of his crimes began to emerge. During his trial in New Mexico for the murder of Pamela Sue Barker, Pruett admitted to robbing her to fuel a severe cocaine habit, which he claimed cost him $4,000 a week. Despite this admission, he denied being the one who killed her.
Ultimately, a jury found Marion Albert Pruett guilty of the murder of his common-law wife, and he was sentenced to life in prison for the crime. This was one of several life sentences and a death penalty he received for the string of murders he committed in 1981. Pruett was executed by lethal injection in Arkansas on April 12, 1999, for one of the other murders. Even while on death row, he continued to deny his role in Barker's death and sought to profit from her memory by attempting to sell information about her engagement ring.
