In what was initially staged to appear as a tragic accident, the death of Fred Andrew Wyatt, a 45-year-old white male from Clayton County, Georgia, was later discovered to be a premeditated murder. On November 12, 1977, Wyatt's body was found inside his vehicle which had been positioned on a set of railroad tracks and subsequently hit by a train. However, the scene was not what it seemed. Investigators determined that Wyatt had been shot in the head before the collision with the train, and the driver's seat was adjusted to a position that would have been unnatural for a man of his stature, indicating he was placed in the car after he was already deceased.
For over two decades, the case of Fred Wyatt's death remained cold. The investigation into his life revealed his involvement in illicit activities such as drug trafficking and a history of domestic abuse. His tumultuous relationship with Betty Jo Ephlin, who was also found murdered around the same time, added another layer of complexity to the case. Ephlin's body was discovered in the Flint River, having also been shot in the head. The break in the case finally came in 2003 with advancements in DNA technology.
The new evidence led authorities to Carl Millard Patton Jr., Wyatt's nephew. Faced with the DNA evidence, Patton confessed to the murder of his uncle and three other individuals. The motive behind Wyatt's murder was a life insurance policy taken out by his common-law wife, Marie Jackson Wyatt, who had allegedly offered Patton $15,000 for the killing. Patton, with the help of a friend, Joseph Thomas Cleveland, carried out the murder. Fearing exposure, Patton then went on to kill his accomplice Cleveland, as well as Betty Jo Ephlin and another woman, Liddie Matthews Evans, to silence any potential witnesses. Following his confession, Carl Millard Patton Jr. pleaded guilty to all charges and was sentenced to multiple life sentences in prison.
